Kill Devil Hills is a town in North Carolina along the Outer Banks. It was supposedly named for its pirate rum that was so bad (or good) it could kill a devil. This was a hotspot for sinking ships and sea wrecks that dot the coastline, prompting a Lifesaving Station to be built in the early 1880’s and continue to operate until the 1930’s. 

The town is famous for being the staging area for the Wright Brother’s famous flights, both the failures and the nine minute long glide that launched them into aviator history. The reason they chose this was because many of the dunes were well above 100 feet tall, giving their flimsy constructions a viable launch point.

In 1972, the effort to create a national emergency phone line and response service is trying to innovate. A call for help reaches the ears of an unknowable horror the very same night these rookie telecommunicators begin their first night shift.
